Whether you are joining us at our field school as an expedition student, or simply passing through on your travels, be sure to check out our exciting array of workshops. We have a number of classes that cover a broad range of subjects so whatever your interests there is sure to be something to catch your attention.

Overview:

A Fun Dive with a difference! During our eco-dive coral plant workshop you will learn about some of the main threats facing coral reefs as well as some of the conservation methods used to repair the damage. After learning the theory we take you on a 60-minute dive to one of our breathtaking local reefs where you will get to explore the beauty of the underwater world before planting your very own coral fragment in one of our coral restoration gardens. After returning from the dive you can join our team on-site for lunch before joining a second dive or saying goodbye.

Overview:

Take your understanding of and appreciation for the underwater world to a whole new level! During our eco-dive fish ID workshop we go through some of the most common and charismatic fish families that you are likely to meet whilst diving in the Indo-Pacific. We also explain the dangers of an unregulated fishing industry and how this is having impacts on ocean health across the globe. Next, we take you on a 60-minute dive where you will have the chance to put your new ID and dive sign knowledge to the test as we examine the diverse array of fish species inhabiting our local reefs.

Overview:

Explore the tropical beauty of coastal mangrove forest whilst we show you just how important these ecosystems are. Not only will you gain a new appreciation for these diverse habitats and the threats that face them but you will also have the opportunity to get hands-on in our mangrove nursery planting your very own sapling.

Overview:

Coral Watch is a not-for-profit citizen science program based at The University of Queensland working with volunteers worldwide to increase understanding of coral reefs, coral bleaching, and climate change. During our workshop, we explain some of the basics of coral biology including the bleaching process. Our workshop then introduces you to the Coral Watch Coral Health Chart as well as their survey methods, before heading into the water to get some hands-on experience. We have two options for this workshop, a scuba and snorkel course, or a snorkel-only course, so whether you are a diver or not you can still make a valuable contribution to our oceans by collecting data for the Coral Watch Citizen Science global initiative.

Overview:

This workshop will take the beginner photographer to an advanced level in no time and fill any gaps in your photography knowledge that may be preventing you from reaching your full potential. We cover all of the elements involved in shooting in manual and apply the knowledge learned to a range of briefings and situations. This course will give you a whole new level of control over your images and allow you to take photographs that stack up against any professional-looking photography.

Overview:

Our Post-Processing workshop guides you through the photo editing process in Adobe Lightroom from start to finish. We take you through setting it up correctly, organising your collections and creating a workflow that works for you, before delving into the capabilities of all of the editing tools available. From there we move on to how Adobe Photoshop can be used in conjunction with Lightroom and examine the variations in the tools offered by each program. Using both programs we’ll show you how to create specific artistic effects (high impact Black and white, vintage, sun-filled, vibrant, etc.), and how to fix common photography problems (grain, under- or over-exposed, distractions, etc.). We’ll also discuss the difference between general and local edits and how to identify the most appropriate tools for the issues you are experiencing in your images. At the end of the workshop you will be able to confidently manage your photo collection with Lightroom, achieve desired artistic effects and make your photos truly stand out.

Overview:

Our Underwater Photography Workshop is an advanced program exploring the specifics of taking high-quality images underwater. We take you through the different equipment options available, as well as how to fully prepare and operate your camera safely and responsibly whilst diving. Next, we take you through the many compensations that need to be made to account for the differences in conditions between underwater and on-land environments. With a 2- or 4-dive option you will have plenty of opportunity to practice and develop your new skills whilst also trying your hand at both wide-angle and macro underwater photography. Finally, we head back to the classroom where we take you through post-dive care for your equipment and post-production musts for underwater images.
